The references to classical dance are lost, mingle and intertwine with those of many other disciplines. One of the essential characteristics of contemporary dance is its flexibility, its openness to seek in every direction. The resulting language is extremely diverse, multi-faceted; sometimes approaches to theater and its essential gesture, other times instead lands in solutions of complex and amazing motion.

As in most of the forms of dance, the technique is an essential parameter which is based on the movement. In particular, the Modern Jazz dancers benefit from a work aimed at the knowledge and understanding of the movement, resulting from the techniques of classical ballet: that is the reason why the Classical Dance is an essential technical knowledge for a good dancer of Modern Jazz.

In the second half of the twentieth century, pioneers such as Katherine Dunham, focusing their attention to the essence of Caribbean traditional dance, encode a specific style decreeing thus the subsequent promotion of the original Jazz Dance, to the rank of “performing art”. With the parallel growth of new entertainment music forms, its evolution undergoes rapid accelerated, which leads, within a short time, to Broadway, where it assumes the traits of a more fluir style, which is the version that is still known as Modern Jazz. This version, which is strongly focused on the performance on stage, also called “performance style”, has become famous thanks to the general public, in particular, to the work done by great people like Bob Fosse and Gene Kelly. In Italy, the jazz dance comes in the years 50/60, thanks to some dancers and choreographers from the United States. The first and most important of these was Paul Steffen.
